What is music?

What is music........ Music is not sound (well it is) but that is not all that music is music is mainly a form of expression just like acting, you act to express. Writing a song in music with any instrument is a way of expressing yourself through that instrument but people dont see it like that people just see it as putting notes together. Honestly in my oppinion as a bassist if i write a track it is a form of expressing my feelings through the tone of the track and the notes i decided to use even when i am writing lyrics the words used are all fellings i experience, when most people write songs they use words to make thier feeling discreet and hidden within the song and can usually only be notice when the lyrics have been read over, take "Ex's and Oh's" by "Atreyu" for example this is a song about the lead singer, Alex Varkatzas, fighting alcoholism. The line, "I should have turned and ran like hell last time I got a taste of you" is referring to the alcohol and how he should have never started drinking in the first place, but someone listening to the song probably wouldnt understand that untill they had actually learned the lyrics and thought about them, i am not saying all songs are like that because there not.

This goes for all genres of music there will always be bands/singers who write music based on there felling and just find it a way of expressing themselves, i was in a band called "ethon" with a bunch of my friends and we had a song caklled "cardboard kingdom" which was a song about how you can get away with doing anything when you are a child and your imagination just runs riot with crazy thoughts but as you get older it all just dies out.

I am someone who doesn't think music is a talent to a certain extent anyone with time could pick up a guitar and learn to play and with the time they will gradually get better and that is the same for most things like sports etc..., i have played bass guitar for 5 years and i am not great really i am no where near it but that is due to the fact i didnt put as much time in as i could of over the 5 years i have played.

but isnt everything in life a form of expression?
